In an effort to regain control of Chhattisgarh, the BJP on Thursday nominated candidates for 21 seats. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel's seat in Patan, in Durg district, was represented by Lok Sabha MP Vijay Baghel.
All 21 of these seats were lost by the BJP, and all of the losers from the 2018 state elections have been replaced. The majority of fresh candidates are zilla panchayat members or district-level BJP leaders.
For the upcoming state elections, the Congress has yet to nominate any candidates.
On a BJP ticket, 63-year-old Vijay Baghel defeated 63-year-old Bhupesh Baghel in the 2008 Assembly elections. Vijay's uncle Bhupesh Baghel won reelection in 2018 by defeating Motilal Sahu of the BJP.
Since 1993, Vijay Baghel has only defeated Bhupesh Baghel once as he has won five times from Patan. In 2003 and 2013, he twice bested Vijay Baghel.
