India is now hosting meetings around the nation as the G20 Presidency in preparation for the summit, which will take place in New Delhi in September.
The Delhi Police have implemented Section 144 in northeast Delhi in advance of G20 activities there, prohibiting large gatherings or illegal conduct.
"An order has been issued under Section 144 CrPC enforcing restrictions by the deputy commissioner of police in north-east Delhi, where communal riots broke out in 2020," said the notification.
The deputy commissioner of police for northeast Delhi issued the order on 10 April.
The order has been issued to deal with any circumstance that results in violence or any action that results in a breach of peace during G20 activities in the nation's capital, it said.
Senior police officials stated that the order would be renewed if necessary after a thorough evaluation and is effective for two months.
"There is the apprehension of breach of peace due to a sudden large gathering or Dharna or protest that will rag to march towards the North-East District and tranquilly during various events or meetings to be held in connection with the G-20 Summit 2023," the order states. "Or there is a danger of riot or an affray."
Further, it states that police teams will closely monitor any statements given, any action that can incite racial or religious animosity amongst communities, the shouting of slogans, and the display of posters, placards, or banners in any public area.
"The order has been issued to ensure precautionary measures, and any person violating this order shall be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860," a senior police official told ANI.
He added that the order forbids the use or possession of any such item, and the unrestricted movement of such items will be strictly regulated, as it was discovered during the 2020 riots that rioters had stashed bottles, petrol, bricks, stones, sticks and rods to be used during the violence.
