Problems arise when a motorist lifts their foot off the pedal to slow down in these Tesla vehicles.

Due to a problem with the vehicles' acceleration systems, Tesla Inc. will have to repair practically every car it has ever sold in China.

According to a statement issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation on Friday, approximately 1.1 million electric vehicles manufactured at Tesla's Shanghai facility or imported into China between January 2019 and April this year would require an over-the-air software update to correct the problem.

The issue arises when a motorist lifts their foot off the pedal to slow down. When this happens, the extra power is normally sent to the car's battery to charge it. According to China's authority, this makes the pace of deceleration somewhat unpredictable, increasing the danger of accident and posing a safety threat.

Because of this flaw, drivers may incorrectly press the accelerator pedal for the brake.

Tesla reps did not reply quickly to a request for comment.

Tesla sold around 1,129,055 cars in China from 2014 to March, according to statistics from the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre and Bloomberg Intelligence.

According to Friday's notice, Tesla will also be forced to deliver an electronic message to drivers when they depress the pedal for an extended period of time.
