Carrie Fisher Honoured With A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame On Star Wars Day

Carrie Fisher brought sparkle wherever she went, according to her daughter Billie Lourd, including throwing glitter at Star Wars fans she met at conventions. So Lourd brought some to Fisher's Hollywood Walk of Fame star installation, dusting some across it after the ceremony.

Fisher, best known as Princess Leia in the Star Wars film series, was honoured on May 4, also known as Star Wars Day due to the date's resemblance to one of the series' catchphrases, "May the Force be with you."

Leia's star is not far from her twin brother's—Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, has a star just a few feet away. At Thursday's ceremony, Hamill spoke about meeting Fisher before filming Star Wars when he was 24 and she was 19.

"Every expectation I had was just obliterated," he explained. "I couldn't believe she was so charming, funny, adorable, and wise beyond her years." And very honest!"

Fisher also had famous cinematic parts in When Harry Met Sally and The Blues Brothers, and she received Emmy nominations for guest appearances on 30 Rock, Catastrophe, and her own one-woman show, Wishful Drinking. The latter was based on her book of the same name, which was one of several novels and memoirs she wrote.

But it was Leia's role — first as princess, then as general — for which she would be remembered most fondly. That was not her daughter's first reaction.

According to Billie Lourd, when Fisher initially tried to introduce her to the space saga as a youngster, her reactions were "it's too loud, mama" and "is that lady in the TV you?" She only became interested in the films when her middle school peers began asking about her mother.

"That day, staring at the screen, I realised that no one would be as hot or cool as Princess Leia," Lourd explained.

She went on to say that she came to completely embrace fandom, buying Leia stuff, decorating her home with Star Wars decor, and even landing a role in later films. She also remembered going to fan conventions with Fisher and realising that her mother was, in fact, cool.

"People waited in lines for hours just to meet her; they had tattoos of her; they named their children after her," Lourd explained.

While Fisher was "an incredible actress who infused her strength and wit into every role she played," Lourd remembered her mother as one of the wittiest writers she'd met. Fisher published seven books, but also wonderfully quotable tweets and some very persuasive messages excused her from school, according to her daughter.

Fisher died on the same day as her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, in 2016. While Lourd expressed regret that her own children never met their grandmother, she was overjoyed that she could still pass on a piece of Fisher to them through Leia.
