Shawn Kemp, A Former NBA Player, Was Arrested On A Felony Drive-by Shooting Accusation

On Wednesday, former NBA great Shawn Kemp was arrested and taken into jail in Washington state on a felony drive-by shooting accusation.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in Tacoma shortly before 2 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET) in response to an altercation between the passengers of two vehicles, according to the Tacoma Police Department.

According to authorities, one of the drivers shot several rounds at the occupants of the other vehicle before the "victim vehicle" departed the scene.

They claimed the suspect, who they only identified as a 53-year-old man, was apprehended without incident and placed into a local jail. They discovered a firearm at the site.

According to county records, a suspect named Shawn Travis Kemp was booked into a Pierce County jail shortly before 6 p.m. local time (9 p.m. ET) on a felony drive-by shooting charge. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, NBC station KING-TV in Seattle identified the suspect as the six-time NBA All-Star.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment left overnight. A Tacoma Police Department representative declined to comment further on the arrest.

According to records, there is only one person in the United States named Shawn Travis Kemp, age 53.

A man in a red vest jacket can be seen arguing with another individual in recordings that appear to capture sections of the conflict. As the other individual's vehicle begins to pull away, the person in the red vest continues to point at them as sirens sound.

In another video, the individual wearing the red vest jacket appears to lift their arm before what appears to be a gunshot rings out.

Kemp was a star for the Seattle SuperSonics, who are now the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was selected with the No. 17 overall choice in the 1989 NBA Draft by the franchise and went on to play 14 seasons in the league. Kemp also had time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Orlando Magic.

According to The Associated Press, Kemp was arrested twice in the early 2000s on drug charges, including marijuana possession.

The former NBA player now owns at least one marijuana dispensary in Seattle.

Under Washington law, drive-by shooting is classified as a class B felony. If convicted, Kemp may face up to ten years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine.
