Conrad Sangma sworn in as Meghalaya chief minister
In the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhartiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Conrad Sangma was sworn in as the chief minister of Meghalaya for a second consecutive term on Tuesday. Together with nine other ministers and his two deputies Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhaland Dhar, Governor Phagu Chauhan delivered the oath of office to Sangma. One woman minister, M Ampareen Lyngdoh, will serve in the new administration, which will be known as the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0. Rakkam A. Sangma, Marcuise M. Marak, AT Mondal, and Comingone Ymbon are additional members of the new government; all hail from Sangma's National People's Party (NPP). Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla represent the United Democratic Party, while Al Hek represents the BJP. The Hill State People's Democratic Party has chosen Shakliar Warjri to fill the position. The BJP and NPP ran independently in the assembly elections last month, but afterwards formed an agreement to create the new administration. The BJP was able to win two seats, while the NPP increased its total from the 20 seats it won in 2018 to 25, falling short of a majority in the 60-member house. Prior to his two-day trip to the northeast, Modi travelled to Meghalaya via Guwahati in order to attend the swearing-in ceremonies for the new administrations in Nagaland and Tripura. Now that Neiphiu Rio is ready to become the new chief minister of Nagaland for a fifth term today, the prime minister will go for Kohima. In the recent assembly elections, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and its allies BJP won 37 of the 60 seats. Modi will go to Agartala on Wednesday to take part in the inauguration of the BJP-led administration in Tripura. After Manik Saha's reelection as the party's parliamentary leader on Monday, the BJP declared its intention to become the next government in Tripura. On Wednesday, Modi will take a flight back to Guwahati and preside over a meeting of the Group of Ministers. The meeting will cover the development and application of Assam's developmental plans.
