Olaf Scholz the chancellor, announced on Thursday that Germany and its partners were in discussions with Kiev about future security guarantees in advance of a lasting settlement in Ukraine. In a statement to the German parliament, Scholz stated, "We are engaging with Kyiv and other partners regarding future security guarantees for Ukraine. Nevertheless, he said, "Such security assurances come with the assumption that Ukraine effectively defends itself in this battle." He also stressed that Germany will continue to provide weaponry to Kyiv. Little over a year after Russia began its assault of Ukraine, Scholz gave his address, prompting the chancellor to declare a new era in German defence and foreign policy. Germany has expanded military spending, severed commercial connections with Russia, and removed restrictions on transferring weapons to combat zones. Scholz reaffirmed the need for Russia to remove its forces from Ukraine and said that President Vladimir Putin was not prepared for negotiations on a "fair peace" and an end to the conflict. At this time, "nothing implies" Putin will sit down to negotiate, according to Scholz. In response to US suspicions that Beijing was considering aiding Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, Scholz also used the address to caution China against doing so. "Use your influence on Moscow to urge for the removal of Russian soldiers," Scholz told China in a clear message. And don't give armaments to the belligerent Russia.
