Coach T.J. Otzelberger stated Wednesday that Iowa State guard Caleb Grill, who started all but three games and was the Cyclones' third-leading scorer, had been fired. In a statement, Otzelberger stated, "We hold our players to high standards, and there are expectations that our student-athletes are held accountable for. The Kansas native in his fourth season averaged 9.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Before going off the bench in a game against TCU on February 15, he had started 22 straight contests. At the time, Otzelberger stated that Grill needed to rest his achy back. Grill came off the bench in the last two games against Oklahoma and West Virginia but sat out the road games against Kansas State and Texas.Grill played as a freshman for Iowa State before transferring to UNLV the next year, under Otzelberger's leadership. Grill returned to Ames last year when Otzelberger was hired as the Cyclones' head coach. Throughout 116 games at UNLV and Iowa State, he averaged 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.
