Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup At Wembley Stadium, ending their six-year trophy drought. Casemiro's header and a Marcus Rashford goal gave Newcastle too much to overcome in their first League Cup final appearance since 1976. United last won a major trophy during their 2017 Europa League campaign, but they looked confident in their performance against Eddie Howe's team. The first title of the year was won during a fantastic moment, but Bruno Fernandes remarked, "But we want more — it's not enough for this club, we want more, and we need more because our standards require more." I am happy, but I want more. "For me, it was about winning trophies, and ultimately we achieved it. I want a lot more. At a chaotic opening, there weren't many clear-cut chances, but on 33 minutes, United took the lead with the first of two fast goals as sturdy midfielder Casemiro sparked chaos across half of Wembley. The Brazil international skillfully flicked a header into the far corner after Luke Shaw produced a dipping pass from a wide free kick. After a VAR assessment, it was determined that he had been played just slightly onside. Six minutes later, with the momentum in their favour, United increased their advantage when Newcastle's Botman assisted Rashford in scoring on his own goal. Rashford is passed into the back by a charging Wout Weghorst. As United strengthened their hold on the trophy, Botman deflected the 25-year-attempt old's from a tight angle up and over the stretched Loris Karius. Botman first declared the goal an own goal, but later on Sunday it was determined to have been scored by Rashford, giving the England international his first goal in a championship game in seven appearances.

In stoppage time of the first half, Weghorst again threatened with a well-placed long-range shot, but Karius, making his first start since February 2021, was up to the challenge. In the second half, Newcastle made a stronger but futile comeback. Joelinton came the closest to scoring, but Lisandro Martinez expertly stopped his attempt as United easily secured the win. Newcastle boss Howe remarked, "No issues with how we played; obviously, the scoreboard doesn't show that, and that's where football can be cruel. "I'm sorry we were unable to satisfy the supporters today." During the trophy presentation, Newcastle's supporters dispersed after creating a sea of black and white with free plastic flags on the west side of the stadium during the final minutes of play. The team has now dropped all nine of its games played at Wembley, a streak that started with the 1974 FA Cup final. The Manchester United supporters, on the other hand, were raucous when Bruno Fernandes hoisted the trophy, hoping it would be the first of many under Erik ten Hag. The first season under the former Ajax boss has been better for United. They are still in the Europa League draw and currently sit third in the Premier League. After Jose Mourinho left Old Trafford, Ten Hag is the only manager to do so.
