David Warner Promises to Continue Playing Until 2024 and Hopes to Still Make Ashes Cut

David Warner, the struggling Australia opener, promised on Thursday that if the selectors wanted to end his stellar Test career, he would continue to play white-ball cricket until 2024. Warner landed in Sydney on Thursday after learning that an elbow fracture will prevent him from playing in the next two Tests of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India. Warner struggled in the first two Tests he played against India, scoring just 1, 10, and 15 runs in three innings, and he was substituted out of the Delhi Test's second innings owing to a concussion. In a statement to media, Warner said, "I've always stated I'm playing until 2024; if the selectors believe that I'm not worthy of my status (in tests), then so be it, and I can press on to the white-ball things."At Sydney Airport, Warner spoke with media. Despite his poor performance, the experienced left-hander, 36, still believes he will be selected for this year's Ashes tour. There is a lot of cricket left for the side to play over the next 12 months, and Warner added, "If I can keep scoring runs and putting my best foot forward for the team and improve my place, that'd be good for the team." When you're 36 to 37, critics have it easy on you. I've also witnessed it with former players. So for me, he said, "if doing that relieves pressure off the other men and stops anyone from worrying about the rest of the squad, I'm delighted to do that. During a protracted dry run in the format, Warner's Test career was put in jeopardy. In the previous three years, he had only achieved one test century. Tony Dodemaide, an Australia selector, steadfastly declined to comment on Warner's Test future or whether or not he will be selected for the Ashes on Wednesday. We are dedicated to selecting the best fit and available players for Test series, especially something as important as the Ashes, he had added. "We'll discuss the Ashes preparations (at a later stage)," he had said. Nonetheless, Warner is part of Australia's 16-man ODI team for the three-match series beginning on March 17 in Mumbai, India. On July 16 in Birmingham, the five-match Ashes series will get underway.
