In a Pro Chess League online encounter, Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi became the fourth Indian to surprise Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Gujrathi, a player for the Indian Yogis team, profited from the error of world number one Carlsen, who failed to recognise a checkmate late on Tuesday. Carlsen was competing in the Pro Chess League, an online competition for teams from all over the world, while representing the Canada ChessBrahs. There are 16 teams participating in the tournament, which has a USD 150,000 prize pool. This marked Carlsen's first triumph over the current world champion. Importantly, Gujrathi defeated his well-known opponent with black pieces by taking advantage of a strategic error. Hence, the 28-year-old Gujrathi joined other Indian GMs such R Praggnanandhaa, D Arjun Erigaisi and Gukesh defeated Carlsen. The three had already defeated the Norwegian superstar in a number of competitions last year. "Beating the GOAT (Best of All Time) in chess is a great experience, and I couldn't have hoped for a better moment," Gujrathi said.

The Indian team, captained by Gujrathi and including Vaishali, Raunak, and Aronyak, defeated Carslen, Aryan Tari, Razvan Preotu, and Jennifer Yu in the Pro Chess League match to enter the final round with a one-point disadvantage. According to the rules, the game is won by the side that scores 8.5 first. With Gujrathi leading the pack on the top board, the Yogis simply turned the tables by triumphing on all four boards. "It's more more amazing since the team won on all four boards and came out on top at the key moment." I had several opportunities to defeat Magnus (Carlsen), but I was unable to seize them, Gujrathi claimed. "I'm delighted I did it at last. The team, all of the players, and R. B. Ramesh, our coach, deserves praise. Everyone on the squad is in a great attitude after yesterday's incredible performance, and hopefully we succeed this time.
