BAFTA Viewers Are Confused By Ageless Catherine Zeta Jones Accent As She Presents The Best Film Award

During the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, Catherine Zeta-Jones went all out in a stunning purple and gold flowing gown. The attractive actress, who rose to stardom in the popular drama series The Sweet Buds of May in 1991, impressed the audience when she walked the stage to give the award for best film to All Quiet on the Western Front. The Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for her work as the vampish Velma Kelly in Chicago in 2003 looked stunning as she ascended the stage at London's Royal Festival Hall. Nevertheless, Catherine, 53, had fans scratching their heads as the ceremony aired on BBC One.

Some didn't realise that Swansea-born Catherine was Welsh as they associated her with her Latina character Elena de la Vega in the film The Mask of Zorro. @TheDouggernaut marvelled on Twitter: "Just found out Catherine Zeta Jones isn't latina." And @Mofoman360 asked: "How incredible did Catherine Zeta Jones look She’s 53."

@aminAKActs said: "I will forever be spun that Catherine Zeta-Jones is Welsh. Zorro really did well in convincing me that she was Spanish." And @hrudds said: "Catherine Zeta Jones, everyone's favourite Welsh Latina."

@DANOSFILMS asked: "CATHERINE ZETA-JONES IS WELSH???" And @ayxnnax also exclaimed: "catherine zeta jones is welsh????

@MikeyPB thought they detected an American accent from Catherine, who is married to fellow Hollywood icon Michael Douglas. "Her accent,Welsh gone?, now Americanish," they said.

But others thought her Welsh accent came through strong. @KingOfSunshine tweeted: "I love how Catherine Zeta Jones is Welsh at UK ceremonies but as American as Cherry pie on her T-Mobile commercial." And @fairkore shouted: "I'VE RESORTED TO YELLING WHERE IS CATHERINE ZETA JONES HELLO WELSH BABE."

@villinelle applauded: "The highlight of the baftas for me was seeing catherine zeta-jones and knowing she hasn't lost her welsh accent." And @HannaFlint said: "I know Catherine Zeta Jones is Welsh but I don't remember her sounding this Welsh. Love to hear it."

@NancyDurrant wrote: "I love hearing Catherine Zeta Jones being Welsh." @TraylorHolmes said: "I love that even though Catherine-Zeta Jones has been living in America for decades she still sounds so Welsh." And @hahncolman admired: "Absolutely obsessed with how catherine zeta-jones brings her welsh accent back whenever she’s back in the uk.
