The newest advancements in artificial intelligence have been included into a new edition of Microsoft's Bing search engine. The update uses OpenAI's ChatGPT technology, which has been sweeping the globe since its release a year ago. The action ushers in an AI arms race between the two businesses and represents by far the largest challenge to Google's dominance in web search.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, remarked, "The race begins today."
ChatGPT, a product of Microsoft-backed OpenAI, produces replies to search queries that are human-like.
The way that people engage with many other software products and do online searches, according to Mr. Nadella, is about to alter.
He asserted that "pretty much every software category we are aware of will change due to this technology."
In instead of only providing links to websites, Bing will soon provide more thorough responses to search inquiries.
In order to further customise their questions, users can now speak with the bot. On the right side of a search results page, more contextual responses will be added.
The brand-new Bing search engine will go online immediately away with a cap on how many searches each user may conduct.
The release comes a day after Google unveiled information regarding Bard, its own brand-new chatbot.
Both businesses are rushing to launch their products.
Microsoft's investment, according to analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities, will "massively increase" the company's competitiveness, he wrote in a note to investors following the news.
According to him, "the AI arms race among Big Tech is underway, and this is just the first step on the front of AI."
Microsoft has been spending billions on artificial intelligence and was an early supporter of San Francisco-based OpenAI.
It revealed last month that it would be extending its partnership with OpenAI through a "multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment."
Since then, Microsoft Teams, its messaging platform, has revealed a new premium tier that will include ChatGPT, including a function that automatically creates meeting notes and highlights.
Bing will employ OpenAI technology, according to Microsoft, which is even more sophisticated than the ChatGPT technology announced last year. Additionally, the functionality will be added to its Edge web browser.
Analysts claim that ChatGPT, which students have used to pass exams and tests, has the potential to significantly disrupt a number of industries, including media.
However, it has come under fire for providing responses that are incorrectly and confidently. Additionally, it uses datasets that were often scraped in 2021 or before, so many of its solutions may seem dated.
