After more than ten years of playing for Australia in international cricket, Aaron Finch has announced his retirement. Finch made his Twenty20 international debut in 2011 and represented his nation in all three formats while captaining more over 100 T20 and one-day international contests. While David Warner was serving a ball-tampering suspension at the close of 2018, the 36-year-old stood in at the top of the order for five Test matches, but it was in coloured apparel that Finch truly established his mark. He took home the ODI World Cup in 2015 and helped Australia win the men's T20 World Cup for the first time in 2021. "Now is the moment to stand down since I know I won't be playing till the following T20 World Cup in 2024,"Finch advised slowing things down to allow the crew more time to prepare for the event. "I'd want to express my gratitude to my family, particularly my wife Amy, as well as to my teammates, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, and the Australian Cricketers' Association for their support, which enables me to compete at the greatest level in the sport I adore. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to all of my fans for their support during my worldwide career. The first T20 World Cup victory in 2021 and winning the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two experiences I love the most since team success is what you play the game for. having the opportunity to play with and against some of the a tremendous honour to be considered one of the best players ever."Since 2014, the imposing opener has led his side in 76 Twenty20 matches, and in 2013, in Southampton's Rose Bowl, he set the record for the highest individual score in an international game with 156 off 63 balls against England. With 172 off 76 against Zimbabwe in 2018, his second and last T20 tonne, he smashed his own record. He also holds the record for the most games played and runs scored for Australia's men's squad in the shortest international format with 3,120 runs from 103 games. He received the Australia T20 Player of the Year award in 2014 and 2018 and, with 3,245 runs, is second only to Chris Lynn in the men's Big Bash League.

The Melbourne Renegades have played 102 games. After making his ODI debut in 2013, Finch went on to score 17 ODI hundreds and 30 half-centuries. In 2020, the Australian Cricket Awards awarded Finch the men's ODI player of the year. But following that year, his performance in the 50-over game plummeted; he averaged just over 12 with the bat in 14 matches. As a result, he decided to withdraw from the format last year. When the team's unsuccessful World Cup defence was done and their next 20-over game wasn't until September, Finch opted to step down as T20 captain, creating a void at the top of the order and in the leadership ranks.Warner, Steve Smith, and Matthew Wade have all taken over as captain throughout his reign, but there isn't a clear successor. Aaron Finch's replacement as ODI captain, Pat Cummins, may not be given the responsibility of captaining the squad in all three competitions by Cricket Australia. At his retirement news conference, Finch remarked, "Travis Head, Ashton Turner—these sorts of people are seasoned; they know how to win as well, so whichever way [the selectors decide], the squad is in terrific hands." "Because it will be a period of change, the time between now and the T20 World Cup in 2024 is particularly significant." " The team requires time to adjust to the new leader's presence.
