The Brooklyn Nets had a busy weekend as Kyrie Irving's request for a trade was soon granted in the shape of a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. The Nets defeated the Washington Wizards at home between the request and the completion of the task, and second-year guard Cam Thomas scored 44 points in just 29 minutes while playing off the bench. Thomas, who has a well-deserved reputation as a bucket-getter, put on a very strong performance, earning him a spot in the starting lineup for the Nets' game against the L.A. Clippers on Monday night at Barclays Center. Thomas was the main perimeter scoring option against the Clippers since Irving was out, Kevin Durant was hurt, and Spencer Dinwiddie wasn't yet available. In other words, he made use of that freedom. Thomas scored 22 points and made five three-pointers in the opening period.Thomas continued to run quickly in the second half after that. In fact, he completed the game with 47 points, a game and career record, on 15 of 29 shooting and 7 of 11 from three-point range. Thomas made some history, but his explosion wasn't nearly enough to help the Nets, who were playing without several players, win. In the history of the team, Thomas is only the sixth player to record at least 40 points in back-to-back contests. He also joined an even smaller group of players who have scored at least 44 points in two straight games, as well as a rather restricted club of NBA players who have equaled or exceeded points in back-to-back games this season. Last but not least, Thomas, 21, gained notoriety as the second-youngest player in NBA history to score at least 40 points over the course of two games, second only to LeBron James. It goes without saying that without Irving, Thomas is unlikely to average more over 40 points per game. However, Thomas's relentless dedication to scoring has value, and his ability to create shots may be very helpful for a club like Brooklyn as it navigates a transitional stage. If nothing else, Cam Thomas' offensive arsenal is amazing to watch in action during this two-night assault.
