38-Year-Old ROH Star Jay Briscoe Dies in a Car Accident
The famous ROH tag team champion Jay Briscoe (actual name Jamin Pugh) passed away in a vehicle accident on Tuesday night.
According to The Shore News Beacon, "four patients were imprisoned" in the tragic incident. Two fatalities and "two serious patients," one of whom was described as "paediatric," were reported in the report.
The news was verified by ROH owner Tony Khan. During the show, WWE NXT also made Briscoe's passing known, and Vic Joseph expressed his sorrow.
"Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for almost 20 years, from the inaugural show till today," Khan said on Twitter a few hours after Jamin Pugh died away.
"To this day, Jay and his brother Mark are still the undisputed champions of ROH. We'll make every effort to help his family.
"Jamin, rest in peace."
Despite a storied career spanning two decades, Jay and Mark Briscoe were perhaps in the middle of their strongest stretch at the time. In recent years, the 2021 Final Battle series saw The Briscoes and FTR rewrite tag team history with a candidate for Match of the Year. With a Match of the Year contender at the 2021 Final Battle, The Briscoes and FTR completely changed the course of tag team history. The teams then engaged in a series of intensely violent—and incredibly entertaining—matches, the last of which was a Double Dog Collar match at the 2022 Final Battle.
The Briscoes were long recognised as one of the top tag teams in the world by die-hard wrestling fans.As a result of AEW and Tony Khan's acquisition of ROH, their profiles soared.
It would be fascinating to watch how AEW handles the passing of Briscoe, who joined AEW Dynamite less than 24 hours before. In an effort to honour Brodie Lee (Jon Huber) and his legacy in 2020, AEW televised what many people believe to be the best wrestling tribute event ever. It's a sure bet that the organisation will honour Briscoe's amazing history on Wednesday night given Tony Khan's more understanding attitude to the wrestling business.
