Highlights and analysis of the Arsenal vs. Tottenham match, in which Lloris Howler helps the Gunners win an important rivalry match.
With a 2-0 victory against rival Tottenham on Sunday, Arsenal increased its lead over the pack in the Premier League to eight points.
Even though the Gunners were already in first place, they were aware that a win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium might significantly increase their advantage after Manchester City's loss to Manchester United the day before.
Hugo Lloris' terrible blunder gave them the ahead after only 30 minutes, and Martin Odegaard doubled it as the visitors grabbed complete control. After the interval, Spurs at least attempted to come back, and it required some outstanding goalkeeping from Aaron Ramsdale to save Ryan Sessegnon and Harry Kane.
However, the Gunners coasted to their first away league victory against Spurs since 2014 with at least 15 minutes left to play, seizing control of the title race as the season nears its midpoint.
Final score between Tottenham and Arsenal:
1H | 2H | FT | |
Tottenham | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Arsenal | 2 | 0 | 2 |
Goals: ARS 14, LLloris (OG).
ARS Odegaard, 36th minute
Spurs needed to maintain their composure in the opening stages of the match given Arsenal's propensity for strong starts. Instead, Lloris flapped at a drilled Bukayo Saka cross with less than 25 minutes remaining and managed to put it into his own net, much to the pleasure and amusement of the Gunners.
Soon after, Son Heung-min was denied by a fine Ramsdale save, but Spurs seemed to falter as a result of their captain's mistake, and Arsenal gained charge.
As the leaders pushed for a second, Odegaard sting Lloris' palms and Thomas Partey sent a shot off the post.
Odegaard received much too much room on the outside of the box before blasting the ball into the bottom-right corner just before halftime.
This season, Spurs have developed a pattern of improving in the second half, and they duly responded. Ramsdale did well to deflect a Kane drive before reaching out a foot to save Ryan Sessegnon's low strike from within the box.
Kane's attempt from point-blank range was blocked by Gabriel, and Son's drive from 12 yards was deflected over the bar, but by that time, many home supporters had already departed the stadium, leaving Arsenal to enjoy an eight-point advantage over champions Manchester City.
