The Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institution of Water and Sanitation is the new name of the National Centre for Drinking Water, Sanitation, and Quality in Kolkata, the government announced on Wednesday.

The request to rename the institute built on 8.72 acres of land at Joka, Diamond Harbour Road, Kolkata, received ex-post facto approval from the Union Cabinet at a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The institution was opened by the prime minister last month.

Through training programmes, it is envisioned as a leading institute that will help states and union territories build their skills in the areas of public health engineering, drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene.

The leaders of local bodies, both rural and urban, as well as the frontline workers tasked with carrying out the Swachh Bharat Mission and the Jal Jeevan Mission are also expected to have access to these capabilities, according to an official release.

As a result, appropriate infrastructure has been created, including a residential complex, a building for research and development, and infrastructure for training.

To aid in the teaching at the institute, working and scale models of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) technologies have also been erected. The founder of the Jana Sangh, Mookerjee, was a pioneer in national unification, an inspiration for industrialisation, a renowned scholar, and the University of Calcutta's youngest vice chancellor.
