Tottenham and France captain Hugo Lloris retires from international football

The captain of the france and both Tottenham Hotspur, Hugo Lloris, has announced his retirement from international play.

Hugo Lloris, the World Cup champion goalie for France in 2018, has retired from international football at the age of 36.

The captain of Tottenham has a record 145 caps for the French men's team, 121 of them as captain.

On Monday night, the French Football Federation announced the news on Twitter, highlighting some of his accomplishments and adding the hashtag "A Legend." Congratulations and gratitude to you, Hugo.

Hugo Lloris has decided to stop his international career after more than 14 years of wearing the French team's shirt, it said in a statement on its website.

On Monday, January 9, "the goalie and captain of Les Bleus formalised their decision."

Lloris, a member of France's 2018 World Cup-winning team, earned his debut for his country at age 21 in a friendly match against Uruguay in 2008.

In 2010, 2014, the victorious 2018 campaign, and most recently in 2022, when his team fell 4-2 to Argentina on penalties in last month's final, he participated in four World Cups—a joint record for France.

He beat Lilian Thuram to become France's all-time leader in caps in Qatar, and with 20 appearances for his country, he also owns the record for most World Cup games played.

"Hugo has decided to retire while he is still at the peak of his game," France manager Didier Deschamps stated. He recently talked to me about his ideas and choice.

As he proved during the most recent World Cup in Doha, "I must, and we must, respect it, even if he still has a position in our team."

"A very distinguished member of the French squad retires, and I want to honour his extraordinary career."

Beyond all the milestones his skill and professionalism have allowed him to achieve, beyond the crucial part he played in our greatest victories—the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League—and in our most romantic journeys—the Euro 2016 final and the 2022 World Cup.

"On a human level, Hugo is a fantastic person." He was the captain when I took over as coach in 2012; I kept the armband for him and never looked back.

"Hugo has a very high opinion of the French team; he has always been focused on the collective; he has always advanced it, occasionally even at his expense."

Being his trainer was a pleasure and an honour for me. I wish every coach had players to manage like him.

"Hugo has my utmost regard and appreciation." I want him to be content. Hugo, we sincerely appreciate you for representing your nation so admirably.

Lloris began his career at Nice, making his first-team debut in 2005, before moving to Lyon in 2008. This season, he has made 17 Premier League appearances for Tottenham and has maintained five clean sheets.

He signed a two-and-a-half-year extension to his original deal with Spurs in January 2022, keeping him with the north London side through the summer of 2024. He first joined Spurs in 2012.
