Tamil Nadu Governors Pongal Invite New Flashpoint With Stalin Government

The Governor has utilised Tamizhagam in Pongal invitations while in a dispute with the DMK administration over the name of the southern state.

Chennai:

An invitation from the Governor's House, which refers to the state's government as "Thamizhaga Aazhunar" rather than the Tamil Nadu government, has enraged Tamil Nadu MLAs in the Tamil Nadu versus Tamizhagam controversy, which has been stoked by Governor RN Ravi's recent comments about "a more appropriate name" for the state.

The Tamil invitation for the Pongal festival at the Governor's House Raj Bhavan also omits the state government's logo and only displays the flag of India.

The invitation bears the English name of the Tamil Nadu Governor.

At a gathering last week, Governor Ravi had stated: "Tamil Nadu will reject everything applicable to the entire country." It's been ingrained. There have been a tonne of these written, all of which are shoddy fiction. This has to be fixed. Truth must win out. "The remainder of the country endured a lot of destruction at the hands of outsiders for a long time," is a better word to use.

Thamizhagam, the area's historical name, meaning "the home of the Tamil people," whereas Tamil Nadu means "the nation of Tamils."

The Governor is accused by the ruling DMK and its supporters of utilising the moniker "Thamizhagam" to further the interests of the opposition BJP and its ideological guru, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Party.

TR Baalu, the head of the DMK, said that the man "makes assertions that are factually inaccurate and potentially hazardous."

Even though it is only a few days old, Mr. Ravi's invitation has stirred even more controversy since he left the Tamil Nadu assembly yesterday after a dispute with the state government over his speech.

Su Venkatesan, a CPI(M) member, tweeted screenshots of two invites to the governor's house.

He claimed that whereas an earlier invitation had stated "Tamil Nadu Governor," the Pongal invitation referred to him as "Thamizhaga Aazhunar."

The Governor of Tamil Nadu stated, "Last year, the Governor's House invited me to the Pongal ceremony.

The Pongal celebration invitation now reads, "Thamizhaga Governor." He ought to travel out of the state at the same rate at which he did so yesterday. He ought to be dismissed, the leftist said.

With his exit from the legislature, Mr. Ravi's confrontation with the state government took a dramatic turn for the worst. After Chief Minister Stalin encouraged the Speaker to only record the printed speech prepared by the Tamil Nadu administration and approved by the Governor, it was his way of protesting.

While reading the address, the governor cut out passages that mentioned secularism, social justice, and women's empowerment as well as leaders like Periyar and BR Ambedkar.

In the assembly, DMK allies frequently yelled "Tamil Nadu" as a form of protest. On Twitter, the phrase "GetOutRavi" momentarily became popular.

The governor criticised the ruling DMK, saying that calling the federal government "Ondriya Arasu" in Tamil "belittles the Union government" because "Ondriyam" also refers to a federal agency.

block or a little area. This problem is exclusive to Tamil Nadu. (Ondriyam is the Tamil word for blocks and union. The united government is specifically mentioned by Ondriya Arasu).

With his comments at an event this morning, the governor contributed to the name controversy.
