After supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro attacked and vandalised the government's main institutions on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined other international leaders on Monday in denouncing the rioting in Brazil.
"The reports of rioting and destruction against government buildings in Brasilia genuinely worry me. Everyone must uphold democratic traditions, he said, adding, "We extend our complete support to the Brazilian authorities."
A week after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva left office, Bolsonaro supporters burst into the country's congressional building, Supreme Court, and presidential palace.Silva was inaugurated after defeating Bolsonaro on October 30 in a runoff.
Social media videos depicted Bolsonaro supporters storming the three buildings, breaking windows and furniture, and scaling roofs. Some of the protesters demanded military action to either instal Bolsonaro back into office or remove Lula from the presidency.
