Before switching the ball to Mahrez, Rodri, Sergio Gomez, and Cole Palmer exchanged quick one-touch passes. The effective winger used a typically charming touch to play in the advancing Kyle Walker, who crossed for Foden to score.
The second half was less exciting due to several substitutes and Chelsea's first-half drama until Mahrez added gloss to the score by slamming City's second penalty of the game into the top corner after Kalidou Koulibaly misplayed a pass from Bernardo Silva and ran into Foden.
Why were Chelsea supporters yelling "Thomas Tuchel"?
Graham Potter has had a terrible few months, and he must feel as though he didn't carefully read the fine print on his dream position at Stamford Bridge. However, there is some consolation in that Chelsea's first team injury list now has ten players due to the midweek injuries to Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling. Additionally, City's first and third goals on Sunday were top-notch.
Chelsea, though, boasts a team with impressive depth. Some players, including Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Jorginho, Conor Gallagher, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, and Jorginho, were still eligible to start. The latter two had no qualms about being taken off at halftime, while Ziyech appeared to be a shell of the World Cup-winning player for Morocco. The man who excelled on loan at Crystal Palace last season appeared to be Gallagher once again in a feeble imitation.
Chelsea has only won one of their last eight games overall and two of their last ten domestic games. At the conclusion of each half, some of the opposition fans jeered while others sang in support of Thomas Tuchel, the manager who won the Champions League before being fired earlier.
To a very, very good side, "We were second best." Potter admitted, "We're not in a fantastic place ourselves." "At 2-0, you have to pursue the ball against Manchester City and are forced to choose between adding additional players and avoiding being exposed." It hurt for the first half. "Clearly, as a football club, we're hurting."
Although some Chelsea supporters undoubtedly disagree, Potter recognised that City may have been the worst team to face in the particular situation. Guardiola believes he should be given the chance to turn things around. Give him time, I would advise Chelsea's owner Todd Boehly, he remarked. "I know that with large clubs, performance is crucial, but I'd say give him some time." His work in Brighton is exceptional.
All managers require time. I only needed one season in Barcelona since I had Messi there; I didn't need two.
Live updates and clips from the FA Cup's Man City vs. Chelsea matchup:
Finally, that's it for now. Even though City's 1-0 Premier League victory over Chelsea in the middle of last week was not their best performance, this was a demolition. Graham Potter has a lot of work to do at Stamford Bridge, and if he has any more afternoons like these, the powers that be could decide it would be better if someone else got the job. At the very least, the Blues have strengthened themselves in the transfer market and will do so going forward. Riyad Mahrez's return to this kind of form will make Pep Guardiola feel like he has made a new acquisition.
90th minute: Two further minutes will be added. Riyad Mahrez is currently appropriately recognised as the stadium's man of the contest.
In the 87th minute, Bernardo Silva's excellent play leading up to the penalty was his final move. As Rico Lewis enters, Mahrez charges towards the Chelsea area while ignoring Julian Alvarez in an effort to complete a hat-trick. The guests successfully navigate this tie.
85th second: GOOOOAAAALLLL! (Pen) Riyad Mahrez
Mahrez has had a mixed history when converting from the spot, but given his recent performance, there was little question as he smashed the ball into the top left corner.
84th minute: City is penalised. Running across midfield, Bernardo Silva lobs Phil Foden into the penalty area. He is accidentally hit in the back by Kalidou Koulibaly. This one is going to Riyad Mahrez.
In the 78th minute, Denis Zakaria's attempt from another Chelsea onslaught led by Omari Hutchinson is deflected behind.through Manuel Akanji. The city defender took a lot of it; it stung and it was a chilly evening.
Omar Hutchinson is finding plenty of room down City's left side in the 77th minute. He's been a bright spot, but his most recent cross into the box didn't quite find Carney Chukwuemeka as Kyle Walker mopped up.
Better play from Chelsea in the 74th minute, when a long forward pass finds Cesar Azpilicueta open. David Fofana is beaten by a low ball that Omari Hutchinson drives towards the box.
In the 73rd minute, Riyad Mahrez's confidence has improved following a rocky start to the season.
He makes one of his signature inside cuts before whipping in a shot with his left foot that nearly finds the back of the net. Kepa Arrizabalaga had already abandoned that one.for a goal kick, a basic return pass is made out. That pretty much sums up Chelsea's afternoon—the more seasoned minds, not the more inexperienced ones, have let them down.
69th minute: Pep Guardiola is now providing a running commentary on Cole Palmer and Joao Cancelo's every move. That sounds like a tonne of fun and is definitely not weirdly intense at 3-0.
In the 66th minute, Chelsea is under siege, but Mahrez sneaks in and gives City a chance to score. He floats the ball to Alvarez's left side. Before moving inside and handing the ball to Cole Palmer, the Argentine forward assesses Kalidou Koulibaly. Pep Guardiola adored that act of selflessness on the sidelines.
In the 62nd minute, Joao Cancelo grips the ball on his chest and flicks it over Conor Gallagher's head after Kyle Walker flipped it over him. Gallagher agrees and commits a theatrical foul, earning a booking.
Omari Hutchinson, a new Chelsea prospect, replaces the unproductive Hakim Ziyech in the fray. Bashir Humphreys is replaced by Cesar Azpilicueta, who might be envious of the guys who make more smooth debuts.
In the 59th minute, Rodri does actually leave the field, and Kalvin Phillips receives a standing ovation. Sergio Gomez is the player who will make room for Joao Cancelo.
Kyle Walker takes a quick run at Lewis Hall in the 57th minute to stretch his legs. Perhaps as a result of his recent observation of Joao Cancelo getting set to leave the City bench. We'll also be getting Kalvin Phillips on board shortly, and maybe Rodri's booking will make that happen sooner.
Conor Gallagher's rapid free kick surprises City in the 55th minute, Mason Mount strikes across goal, and Stefan Ortega is at the other end.extending fully to tip the ball behind.
54th minute: There have been a few wonderful touches from players like Foden and Haaland here and there, but the beginning of this second half rightfully has a bit of a testimonial vibe. Mason Mount is fouled by Rodri, and after a brief argument, Rodri is given a booking. That ought to energise everyone.
In the 46th minute, play has resumed. In the midst of Kai Havertz's forgettable afternoon, David Fofana is about to make his Chelsea debut. Mateo Kovacic is replaced by Denis Zakaria in an effort to support a depleted midfield.
Halftime: Some Chelsea supporters who haven't already left for drinks or their home altogether are booing. They are in a dire situation right now.
Graham Potter in a limited sense. Mahrez's opening free-kick was magnificent, and City's third goal was a mini-masterpiece. It should be entertaining to hear Kai Havertz's dressing room justification for his handball in the thick of all that.
Nearly 4-0 in the 45th minute! Julian Alvarez stretches to get the ball after Cole Palmer sends it over the goal's face, but he is unable.
39th second: GOOOOAAAALLLL! Phil Foden, please!
For Chelsea, halftime was beginning to appear to be too far away, and that was simply lovely play by City. Before the ball was passed directly to Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Gomez, Rodri, and Cole Palmer performed a few triangles with the occasional flick and backheel. Kyle Walker was underneath Mahrez when he made one of those early touches, and Walker received the ball.positioned Foden for an easy finish. fantastic football.
37th minute: Kepa leaves his line to assertively claim the corner, perhaps out of concern that Kai Havertz might attempt to punch another one clear.
36th minute: Mahrez strikes it again softly, but this time it goes over Kepa Arrizabalaga's head, and he knocks it away.
Time for Foden to complete his hat trick in the 35th minute as he volleys a backheeled shot to Alvarez. The ball loops back to Kepa because he is unable to make the return. However, blimey, City now exudes a swagger that is a terrible sight for Chelsea. Kalidou Koulibaly fouls Bernardo Silva right on the brink of the penalty area.
33rd minute: Chelsea must now undoubtedly open up a bit more, but doing so will expose a defence that lacks experience. Cole Palmer was just found by Phil Foden as he strolled into midfield. Even though the attack was stopped, City seems to have plenty of fun ahead of them.
30th second: GOOOOAAAALLLL! (Pen) Julian Alvarez
Kepa accurately predicts the move, but Alvarez kicks hard and low to the left. The young men from Argentina are quite skilled at penalties, as we recently discovered.
29th minute: City is penalised! What are you doing, Kai Havertz? The VAR detected an ineffective handball. It will be replaced by Julian Alvarez.
In the 23rd minute: GOOOOAAAALLLL! Riyad Mahrez, please!
Julian Alvarez charges forward from midfield in the 22nd minute. Riyad Mahrez, who checks inside and draws the card, is a touch behind him with his pass.from Lewis Hall, a foul. City is awarded a fair free kick about 30 yards from the goal.
Hakim Ziyech collides with Sergio Gomez in the goalmouth in the 21st minute. Although the referee is uninterested, the youthful full-back faced a potentially dangerous situation.
19th minute: Cole Palmer has a major opportunity and definitely needs to do better! With a beautiful ball over the top, Aymeric Laporte set up his partner for the attack. Palmer entered the Chelsea box from the left but failed to finish with conviction, allowing Kepa Arrizabalaga to touch the ball away at his near post. The ball broke to Palmer in the ensuing corner as an attempt to atone, and he hammered it wildly over.
16th minute: Mason appears to have been set free by some beautiful Chelsea midfield interplay.Mount, but the Englishman is aware that escaping Kyle Walker is difficult. Bernardo Silva and Manuel Akanji are back as City Hunters, hunting in packs to eliminate the threat.
The ball enters the box in the 12th minute when Sergio Gomez defeats Trevoh Chalobah. Julian Alvarez is deemed to have fouled Kalidou Koulibaly, and Phil Foden then attempts an overhead kick that misses to the right.
In the 10th minute, Riyad Mahrez ruthlessly skins Lewis Hall, giving him a brief lesson. Kepa Arrizabalaga gathers as Kalidou Koulibaly returns to slow down the Algerian's cross a bit.
In the eighth minute, City's play out from the back starts to seem a touch careless. When Kai Havertz sees a chance, she charges in to confront Rodri. Even if the Spain midfielder's ankle has some studs, he can still play.
6th minute: Alvarez bothers Kepa once more by being in close proximity. one to watch out for!
5th minute: City are encamped in Chelsea's half, but Conor Gallagher picks Cole Palmer's pocket. When the visitors break, Kai Havertz loses the throughball to Manuel Akanji.
Fourth minute: Julian Alvarez applies some of his customary ferocious pressure, close in on Kepa Arrizabalaga on the goal line, but the Chelsea goalkeeper holds off the pressure.
Minute 1: We're going. There are back fours on both teams, it seems. For City, Cole Palmer is positioned outside of Phil Foden in attacking midfield and on the left wing. The teams are out, the lights are on, and there is a good vibe in the air two minutes before kickoff. Gianluca Vialli's name is being sung by Chelsea supporters, and before we continue, there will be a moment of silence in his honour.
15 minutes before the game: The round four opponent for the victor of Manchester City vs. Chelsea will either be Oxford United or Arsenal. The Premier League leaders are unquestionably overwhelming favourites in tomorrow's match at the Kassam Stadium against League One opposition, and if they advance to face City, it could make for an exciting matchup before their eagerly anticipated top-of-the-table matchup with the Arsenal in the Premier League on February 15.
The FA Cup fourth round draw is set to take place, so City and Chelsea will know what is in store for them by the time the game kicks off, just in case you weren't finding football in the English winter of 2022/23 confusing enough.
40 minutes before the game: So let's talk a bit more about the Chelsea team. Graham Potter has made six changes since midweek, and some of them indicate that even though the Blues are stuck in the middle of the table, the Premier League is still his top aim. Bashir Humphreys, a 16-year-old defender, makes his debut. Although the 19-year-old is a centre back by trade, he might start at right back if Graham Potter decides against playing the back three as Pep Guardiola predicted in midweek.
Lewis Hall, who made an impression on this field in November and also during a substitute cameo versus City on Thursday, gets another start on the left side of the defence. In many ways, Potter's time at Chelsea has been difficult to date, but he still seems dedicated to give Cobham school graduates an opportunity. With the exception of Frank Lampard, it has not typically been the case with his predecessors.
58 minutes before the game: The Chelsea XI is presented here. Undoubtedly, it has a youthful appearance! Yes, Mason Mount does make a comeback. The teams have arrived one hour before the game. In addition to the match-winning duo of Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden from the previous week, Julian Alvarez makes his first City start since his World Cup heroics. Since these teams' Carabao Cup match in November, Sergio Gomez has not started since.
20 minutes before kickoff: Given the short turnaround, both managers are likely to change up their lineups, and Mason Mount is anticipated to start for Chelsea. Fans of the Blues would undoubtedly enjoy seeing the England attacking midfielder. Chelsea hasn't scored against City in either of their last four losses. In those games, Mount has played 31 minutes in total despite not being able to start any of them.
Three days after Riyad Mahrez scored the lone goal in the Premier League match between City and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the two teams will square off again in one hour and 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the football world has been in grief ever since former Italy and Sampdoria striker Gianluca Vialli passed away too soon. Before the game, both sets of players and fans will pay respect to Vialli. Pep Guardiola also had some kind words in his game-day programme notes.
Two hours before the game: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the third-round FA Cup match between Manchester City and Chelsea. City is attempting to defeat the London team for a second straight victory.
