A fox discovered in Woodcreek after a contact with a person tested positive for rabies.
The fox approached a resident on Westwood Drive on the morning of Oct. 28, according to the city of Woodcreek. The fox that had been lurking under her vehicle bit the inhabitant.
"Please be mindful of your surroundings and use additional caution while walking or playing golf outside," the city advised in a press statement. "Do not feed or interact with any wildlife."
When police came, the fox attempted to bite them and was killed. Further tests revealed that the fox was infected with rabies.
"If you notice a fox acting abnormally, do not approach it," Jay advises.
"If you notice a fox acting weird, don't approach it," said Jay Leivdal, a programme expert for the Department of State Health Services. "Odd behaviours include sighting a fox during the day, it being unusually friendly or aggressive, displaying any neurological signs such as being unable to walk, or simply not acting like a regular fox."
There have been reports of foxes acting suspiciously in the neighbourhood since the event, especially on Champions Circle and near the Wimberley First Baptist Church. These instances occurred after the other fox was killed. Rabies, according to Leivdal, can be passed from animal to animal.
"Foxes can spread the rabies virus," Leivdal explained. "Any animal that sheds the rabies virus can transmit it through a bite or scrape... " If you witness any abnormal behaviour in animals or wildlife, contact your local animal control or law enforcement department."
According to Leivdal, confrontations aren't necessarily hostile.
"There are two types of rabies: angry and quiet," Leivdal explained. "With the passive style, the animal will be so nice that it will not even bite you." It will lick you as if you were a dog. "Then there's the aggressive one, which will hunt you down and attempt to bite you."
