HBO has announced the cancellation of "Westworld" after four seasons. The announcement comes little under three months after the series' Season 4 finale aired on August 14.

According to Variety, the decision to cancel the sci-fi drama was influenced by a number of factors, including the production's high cost, falling viewership, and an ongoing examination of programming across the board at HBO's new parent, Warner Bros. Discovery.

The David Zaslav-led corporation has been cutting back on expenditure as part of a goal to implement $3.5 billion in cost-saving synergies over the next three years following the April acquisition. Despite a disappointing third-quarter earnings report, Zaslav has continued to emphasise the importance of healthy content spending, and HBO has several high-profile, big-budget dramas on the way that show the premium cabler isn't cutting back overall, including "House of the Dragon," "Euphoria," and the upcoming "The Last of Us" adaptation.

"Westworld" stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan, and James Marsden and was created by husband-and-wife producing combination Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and produced by J.J. Abrams. Ariana DeBose, Aurora Perrineau, and Daniel Wu were among the Season 4 newcomers.

"Over the last four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have led viewers on a mind-bending voyage, upping the bar at every turn," HBO stated Friday. "We are really thankful to them, as well as their incredible actors, producers, and crew, as well as all of our colleagues at Kilter Films, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television." It's been an honour to accompany them on this adventure.

Nolan and Joy added in their own statement through the banner Kilter Films: "Making ‘Westworld’ has been one of the highlights of our careers." We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds. "We've been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness, both human and beyond, in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so."

Nolan and Joy told Variety in October that they hoped for a fifth and final season to wrap up the programme as intended. "We had always envisioned a fifth and final season," Nolan explained in an interview about his and Joy's upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, "The Peripheral." "We're still in talks with the network."

"Westworld" premiered in October 2016. The titular technologically sophisticated amusement park is packed with A.I. "hosts" in a wild west environment. In Season 2, the programme expanded its scope beyond Westworld to neighbouring theme parks owned and controlled by the same fictitious dystopian organisation, and in Season 3 it delved into the "real world" in all its future splendour. The fourth season of "Westworld," consisting of eight episodes, began on June 26.

The "Westworld" series opener had HBO's greatest audience for a premiere since the debut of "True Detective" in 2014. Following that, the sci-fi drama's first season became the most-watched rookie year of any HBO original series ever. However, its ratings have declined with each season, ending in a precipitous dip in Season 4.

Based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, HBO's "Westworld" was executive produced by Nolan and Joy, as well as Abrams, Alison Schapker, Denise Thé, Athena Wickham, Richard J. Lewis, and Ben Stephenson.

The show has received 54 Emmy nominations and nine wins, including Newton's award for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series in 2018.

"Westworld" is produced by Nolan and Joy's Kilter Films, which has a deal with Amazon Studios, and Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, which has a deal with WarnerMedia in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.
